5 Creative Ways to Make Your Own Music Videos

Music videos can help an audience to connect with your music. A common misconception is that music videos have to be complicated and expensive to produce, however, I will outline five creative ways on how to make your own music videos without breaking your bank account!

But firstly, think about the feeling/(‘vibe’) and genre of the song. Your music video should recreate the song’s meaning and story. After that, you can try to experiment!

1.Home Video or VHS Stylings

Home videos are so underrated!! I think that shooting at your own house would help you to act more creatively. Limitations and boundaries make us think differently and outside the box. Just try that! Also, the gear you have around you can help you too! VHS Stylings are lo-fi retro/vintage aesthetic effects. To achieve this effect, you can work with your personal archives, or, you can create new footage that looks as if it’s found footage. You can use some sort of retro equipment (camcorders or film stock), or, you can always shoot digitally with your regular gear and retrograde your footage in post to make it look like it’s VHS or another older form!

2. New and Cool Camera Tricks

Effects, transitions, colours, yes, people love that!! While you shouldn’t go overboard, taking this chance to try out a cool new practical or post effect can be quite fun—and actually helpful for your music video’s success.

3. Set Studio Location

The set studio location is a staple of the industry. And while it might seem like one of the most boring approaches, working from a set studio location also might be the most creatively flexible in terms of the complete world-building at your control. You can research other music videos you like and compare their set design to lighting and practical on-set effects. There are equally inspired setups that you can expand upon and replicate for your music videos.

4. Thematic Short Film

Start with puttingtogether a short but solid narrative. Think about equipment, people, and place. This can be the most expensive one to do but it’s worth every penny. The experience and the quality will be outstanding! However, before, I would suggest bingeing on movies and films haha!

5. Animation

The most popular version of the animated music video is the lyric version. There are a lot of tutorials on how to do animated music videos so I would advise you to check those out!

Another great place to start is approaching graphic design/animation students who could also ensure you get a decent price and plenty of creative ideas.

Now it’s over to you. I hope these ideas inspired you to make your own music video and sparked your creative spirit!

Be creative and have fun!! ;)
